this year’s guide showcases a variety of businesses, makers, entrepreneurs and artists across the country.
but, as always, this guide is only helpful when we all share and engage with it.we want to help connect more small businesses to more opportunities and make it easier to discover and collaborate.

jodie chiou is an illustrator and designer based in the nyc area who specializes in children’s books and editorial work.
storytelling is central to her creative practice, as seen in her fascination with surreal scenarios, worlds, and characters. vibrant colors, varied textures, and unique shapes are characteristic of her illustrations. jodie loves to incorporate playfulness and strangeness in her work, especially in the context of people, behavior, and relationships, and she believes in connecting to and building community through narrative illustration.
jodie frequently finds inspiration from her childhood memories and taiwanese american identity.
growing up in the suburbs of new jersey, she recalls spending much of her time playing outside, making up stories with her stuffed animals, and practicing instruments, each of which fostered her creative mind. jodie was also part of several communities formed by taiwanese immigrants, such as those of her chinese school and traditional chinese dance troupe. these early community experiences set the foundation for her deep connection with and continued exploration of her cultural identity.
jodie has an m.a. in illustration from the maryland institute college of art and is currently working as a freelance illustrator. in her free time, she enjoys dancing with friends, baking desserts, figuring out funky outfits to wear, and watching ‘90s movies.
